How We Score a Proper Fry-Up: The 7 Pillars of a 10/10 Full Breakfast

From classic London greasy spoons and Belfast Ulster Fry cafés to Sunday morning cast-iron skillets at home — here is the official criteria behind our 1-to-10 Cold-to-Hot scoring system and Bayesian leaderboard.

The 1–10 Cold-to-Hot Temperature Scale

Every plate on Rate My Fry is scored using our interactive 10-point temperature gauge. Lower numbers represent cold, tragic plates, while higher numbers reward sizzling execution:

1 – 3 · Ice Cold to Chilly

Under-rendered bacon fat, pale microwaved sausages, watery beans flooding cold toast, or rubbery overcooked eggs.

4 – 6 · Lukewarm to Warming Up

Honest fuel that gets the job done, but held back by one or two weak links (such as missing black pudding or a breached bean barrier).

7 – 10 · Hot Skillet to Inferno Perfection

Golden runny yolks, crispy bacon sear, textbook sausage breakwater, charred black pudding, and unbeatable caff character.

The 7 Pillars of Fry-Up Anatomy

01

The Sausage Breakwater (Structural Engineering)

Baked beans must never turn toast, fried bread, or potato farls into a soggy sponge. Whether achieved via a strategically positioned Cumberland sausage dam or a dedicated ramekin, bean containment is the #1 mark of a seasoned fry-up architect.

02

Bacon Sear & Fat Rendering

Back bacon or streaky rashers must have properly rendered, crispy golden fat — never pale, flabby, or swimming in lukewarm water. Smoked vs. unsmoked is chef's choice, but the Maillard reaction is non-negotiable.

03

Egg Execution & Yolk Viscosity

Fried, poached, or scrambled: a fried egg should boast a golden, dippable runny yolk without a rubbery base or raw albumen on top. Basting in butter or bacon drippings earns immediate bonus points.

04

Black Pudding & Regional Royalty

From Stornoway and Bury black pudding to Irish white pudding, Lorne square sausage, haggis, or crispy Clonakilty rounds — proper charring on the outside with a rich, velvety centre separates a 7/10 plate from a 10/10 legend.

05

Carbohydrate Crunch (Toast, Fried Bread, Farls & Hash Browns)

Whether it's golden triangular hash browns, traditional bubble & squeak, griddled Ulster soda and potato farls, Welsh laverbread, or slice of fried bread cooked in the skillet — crunch and seasoning are mandatory.

06

Acid & Earth Balance (Tomatoes & Mushrooms)

Mushrooms should be sautéed in butter with a pinch of salt and pepper until deeply golden, not boiled grey. Grilled plum or vine tomatoes should be caramelised and blistered to cut through the richness of the meats.

07

Plate Temperature, Portion Generosity & The Mug of Tea

A warm plate keeps every component sizzling from first forkful to last mop of yolk. Served alongside a proper builder's brew (or fresh coffee) and HP or red sauce within arm's reach.

Why Our Leaderboard Uses True Bayesian Weighting

On a naive average leaderboard, a plate with a single 10/10 vote would outrank a legendary café with forty-two votes averaging 9.4/10. To guarantee fairness, Rate My Fry ranks every entry using a Bayesian weighted score (minimum confidence threshold m = 5 votes blended with the global community mean), so only genuinely proven plates claim the top spots.
